Helton Creek Falls is one of those places that feels a little hidden in the best way.
It’s tucked away near Blairsville inside the Chattahoochee National Forest, and it’s a spot I love recommending to couples who want something simple, natural, and not overly crowded or complicated.
It’s not a “big production” kind of location. It’s more of a slow walk, a waterfall moment, and time together in the mountains kind of place.
And honestly, that’s what makes it really special for elopements.
If you’re still figuring out what your North Georgia elopement could look like, you can also explore my full elopement experience here to see how I help couples plan days like this.
Most couples don’t choose Helton Creek because it’s dramatic or huge.
They choose it because it feels easy.
You don’t have to hike for hours. You don’t need a complicated timeline. You just park, walk a short trail, and you’re suddenly standing in front of a beautiful two-tier waterfall surrounded by forest.
Couples love this location because:
It’s one of those places where you can slow down quickly, which is rare on a wedding day.
A typical elopement here feels really unstructured in the best way.
You might start your day getting ready somewhere nearby in the mountains, then head to the falls and just take your time walking down to the water.
Some couples read vows near the lower falls, others stay closer to the upper viewpoint deck, and some simply explore both areas and let the day unfold naturally.
It’s not a place where you feel like you have to rush through a timeline.
It feels more like:
“Let’s just be here together for a while.”
And that changes the whole energy of the day.
Helton Creek Falls is a two-tier waterfall, which means you get two very different viewpoints in one short walk.
The lower falls feel a little more open and close to the water, while the upper falls give you that classic cascading mountain waterfall view surrounded by forest.
The whole trail is short and straightforward, which is why so many couples choose it for elopements or even just engagement photos.
It’s not about “getting to the top of a hike” here- it’s about stepping into a quiet pocket of nature and letting the waterfall be part of your story.
A few things I always tell couples before choosing Helton Creek:
The trail is short, but it’s still a forest environment, so expect uneven ground and a bit of walking but it’s so quick to get to. When we get closer to the water, your shoes will get wet because we will have to cross through some rocks and shallow water. It’s best to bring a second set of shoes. There are plenty of dry spots to put your items down.
Because it’s so accessible, it’s a popular spot- timing matters if you want privacy.
Especially near the water. It’s one of those “be present and careful” locations.
This isn’t a location you rush through. It works best when you give yourself time to actually experience it.
Some of my favorite moments here are the simple ones:
The location does a lot of the visual work- so the focus naturally becomes the two of you.
