When most people start planning family photos, the first question is usually: “Where should we take them?”
But as a photographer, I’ll be honest- the location is never just about finding a pretty background.
It’s really about understanding how you want your photos to feel.
Do you want them light and airy? More natural and candid? Something a little more scenic and elevated? Once we know that, the location usually becomes a lot easier to choose.
This guide will walk you through how I think about family photo locations around Atlanta and North Georgia, so you can start visualizing what fits your family best.
If you’re ready to plan your session, you can also explore my Atlanta family photographer experience.

When I’m working with families, I’m not just picking a “nice park.” I’m thinking about how the space supports your family, your kids, and the kind of photos you want to walk away with.
The best locations always do two things:
So instead of starting with a map, I usually start with feeling.

If you’re drawn to bright, soft, airy images- the kind that feel warm, timeless, and natural… then open spaces are usually the best fit.
Think:
These types of locations let your family breathe a little. Kids can move freely, you’re not confined to one small area, and the light wraps around everything in a really flattering way.
Styling also plays a big role here. Neutral tones, soft textures, and flowy outfits photograph beautifully in open fields because nothing is competing with the simplicity of the environment.
This is one of the most popular directions for Atlanta family photos because it feels effortless and classic at the same time. If you love the idea of light, airy family photos with soft natural surroundings, there are several Atlanta locations that create this type of feel. One of my favorite places for families who want a mix of open space, greenery, and a relaxed outdoor setting is Piedmont Park. You can read more about what makes it such a great option for family photos in my Piedmont Park family photos guide.

If you want your photos to feel more relaxed and real… less posed, more “this is our family just being together” then wooded areas and river locations are usually the best match.
Around Atlanta, this often looks like:
These locations work really well for families with kids because there’s something to do and explore. It naturally brings out movement, which leads to more candid moments.
Outfits here can be simple and comfortable- jeans, casual dresses, bare feet, layers- anything that lets you focus more on connection than posing.
For families who want something a little more natural and relaxed, locations with trees, trails, and outdoor textures are often a great fit. Places like Garrard Landing Park offer a beautiful mix of nature and movement, which makes it easier to capture the little in-between moments that feel like your family. I share more about this location and what makes it work well for family sessions here: Garrard Landing Park family photos guide.
If you’re open to going just a little outside Atlanta, North Georgia completely changes the feel of your session.
This is where you’ll find:
These sessions feel a bit more like a “mini adventure,” and they’re perfect if you want something that feels a little more elevated and visually striking.
Because the scenery is stronger, styling becomes more important here. Earth tones, layered outfits, and textures tend to photograph beautifully against the mountains.

Sometimes the best location is simply the one that feels easiest for your family.
Smaller local parks around Atlanta are great because:
These sessions are often the most relaxed because you’re not worrying about anything other than just showing up and spending time together.
And honestly, those are usually the photos families end up loving the most long-term.
If you love the look of nature-filled family photos but want something that feels a little more tucked away, Caney Creek Preserve is another beautiful option to consider. The trails, greenery, and natural surroundings create a calm environment that works especially well for families who want their photos to feel authentic and connected while staying in the Cumming, GA area. You can explore more about this location in my Caney Creek Preserve family photos guide.
One thing I always help families think through is how everything works together.
Your location, outfits, and overall vibe should all support the same goal.
For example:
When everything aligns, the session feels effortless-and the photos reflect that.

You don’t need to stress about picking the “perfect” place ahead of time.
When you book with me, I usually ask:
From there, I recommend locations that actually fit your family and the experience you want- not just what looks good on a map.

At the end of the day, family photos shouldn’t feel complicated.
The best sessions are simple:
I’ll guide you through everything else so it feels natural, relaxed, and easy- even if you’re worried about how your kids will do.
