When families start planning photos, one of the first things they usually think about is the location, outfits, and what everyone should wear.
But one of the biggest things that impacts how your final gallery looks is something you cannot see on a Pinterest board:
the light.
As a photographer, timing is one of the first things I consider when planning a family session because the right light can completely change the feeling of your images.
The soft glow you see in natural, timeless family photos usually comes from planning around the best part of the day — golden hour.
If you’re planning family photos in Atlanta and want images that feel warm, natural, and connected, I’ll walk you through why timing matters and how I help families plan a session that feels effortless.

Golden hour is the period shortly before sunset when the sun is lower in the sky and the light becomes softer and warmer.
Instead of harsh overhead sunlight, we get:
This is why many outdoor family photographers plan sessions during this time. The goal is not just to get a pretty sunset photo- it’s about creating an entire gallery where every image feels cohesive and natural.

One of my favorite things about golden hour family photos is that the light helps create the feeling families usually want.
Most families are not looking for photos that feel stiff or overly posed.
They want:
The softer evening light helps support that style because it creates a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere.
It allows me to focus less on “perfect posing” and more on capturing the small moments that happen naturally.

I know evening sessions can sound intimidating, especially if you have little ones.
Parents often wonder:
“What if my toddler is tired?”
“What if my kids aren’t cooperative?”
The truth is — this is exactly why I approach sessions differently.
A family session is not about expecting children to stand still and smile the entire time.
It’s about creating space for movement.
We can:
The best photos often happen when kids are simply being themselves.
The location and the timing work together.
For example:
If you love a light and airy look, open fields and areas with space for the sun to filter through create a soft, dreamy feel.
If you love a more natural and organic look, wooded areas, trails, and locations with texture can create beautiful depth.
This is why I always encourage families to think about the overall feeling they want before choosing a location.

Atlanta has so many different options for outdoor family sessions.
Some families love the classic look of places like Piedmont Park with greenery, open spaces, and city views. Others prefer quieter natural locations where kids can explore and the session feels more relaxed.
Your location should support your family, not make the experience stressful.
That’s why I help families choose locations based on:
Golden hour is naturally soft and warm, which means certain colors photograph especially beautifully.
I usually recommend:
Flowy dresses, linen textures, layers, and comfortable pieces all work beautifully because they move naturally with your family.
Your outfits should complement the environment, not compete with it.

Not every family needs a sunset session.
There are times when a different schedule works better- especially with very young children.
The most important thing is choosing a time that allows your family to feel comfortable while still giving us beautiful light.
My job is to help you find the balance between:

Beautiful family photos are not just about showing up with a camera.
A great session comes from thoughtful planning:
That is what allows the photos to feel natural instead of forced.
